Evolution of Style and Ornament

 The architecture has been influenced by its cultural and historical context. Over the centuries, styles and ornamental elements have transformed the way buildings are constructed and perceived. In this essay I'll be discussing how amazing the evolution of style and ornament in architecture from ancient times to the modern era, analyzing its cultural, social and functional significance has been. Through this evolution, it is highlighted how stylistic and ornamental decisions reflect not only aesthetics, but also the identity and values ​​of a society. 


First of all, it is essential to consider classical architecture, where style and ornamentation reached an unprecedented level of sophistication. The Greek and Roman civilizations established patterns where the use of columns, pediments and friezes not only served a structural function, but also served as a means of artistic expression. The ornamentation, such as the sculptures and reliefs that adorn its facades, exemplify how art and decoration were interdependent in the architecture of this era. 


As we move into the Middle Ages, architectural style underwent a significant transformation with the rise of Romanesque and Gothic. The verticality of these structures, along with their detailed ornamentation, symbolizes an attempt to connect the earthly with the divine, manifesting the influence of religion on architectural decisions. Thus, style and ornament become a vehicle to communicate collective beliefs and aspirations.


Style and ornamentation has traversed and surpassed many different iterations of what’s “usual”. Yet its principal stays the same, the style is well the “trend” for lack of a better term, of that era. Its ornament is the more detailed part of it, how to personalize it. One cannot exist without the other, an eternal partnership and balance of principals, which seems very repetitive in architecture. Style and Ornament, Beauty and function.

Baraka

       I'll be starting this text saying, I had absolutely NO idea what I was going to watch when I decided to watch Baraka, but it was weirdly interesting to me. I have to be honest and say that I found it  a bit boring at first, the only thing that kept my attention was the music. Then, as i slowly understood what it was actually about, I had a little more patience. I really did love seeing all the different cultures and their  traditions and religious activities, it was an eye opener. It's not that I was ignorant to other cultures and their rituals, but I never actually took the time to research and watch said rituals. Comparing buildings with Enviromental Awareness

       When an Architect has got a big big project in place, they don’t just draw something they like and done, no no, they have to consider every single little detail that goes into it, this is “gesto arquitectonico”. Much like the saunas of the Stone Thermal Baths in Switzerland. Also like the monument that is the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris, France .They share similarities but are completely different when you look at them from a spectators point of view      The Stone Thermal Baths structure is a masterpiece. It's built into the ground and with grass on the roof, so as to not disturb the natural scenery and surrounding of the mountain valley it’s placed on, for the residents' pleasure. It has barely any artificial lighting, the different pools with different temperatures and free rain is just such a clever design and way of giving the building a purpose as much as having a certain artistry. Function Vs Beauty

  Relation between Baraka and the Syllabus Upon watching the entirety of Baraka and rereading Intro to architecture syllabus, I can see that they both display this sense of opposites within each other. Let me explain further, In both works, there is a side with a more orderly form, a more organized and sort of mechanical illustration of something, functional. While on the other side, there’s a display of fun, tradition and pleasure in the actions or crafts shown off. These mean that both works prove and contradict each other, function vs. beauty or pleasure. Function, something made with no regard for beauty or how aesthetically pleasing it is, it is only made to work. In the film, this can be seen in the scenes where there is labor, where there are factories with an impeccable automation system or labor camps with millions of people who are working like machines.
